Next Generation Placement Tests

Questions and answers

What schools ask us before they try NGPT. If yours is not here, write to us and we will answer it, and add it.

The test

How long does the test take?

Usually 15 to 20 minutes. The test asks between 18 and 30 scored questions, plus up to 3 new questions that are being tried out and do not count. It stops early when one level is clearly the most likely, so a clear-cut candidate finishes sooner than one who sits between two levels.

Which languages can we test?

English, German, Italian, Spanish and French. Each language has its own question bank covering all eight levels from A1 to C2.

What does the test measure?

Grammar and vocabulary in use: the candidate completes sentences by choosing or typing the missing word. From A2 up, a short reading text and a listening recording at the candidate's level follow, each reported separately as a score out of 5. NGPT does not test speaking, so most schools add a few minutes of conversation when the student arrives.

What does a candidate need?

The link you send, and a phone, tablet or computer with a browser. There is no account to create and nothing to install. If the connection drops or the page is closed, the same link continues where the candidate stopped.

Which levels does it report?

Eight CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, C1 and C2. With the level you get a score from 10 to 89 that shows where inside the level the candidate stands, and the margin of that score.

Can candidates look up the answers?

Each candidate's questions are drawn afresh from a bank of thousands and chosen one at a time from their own answers, so there is no paper to pass on. Answers are checked on our server and the correct answer is never sent to the candidate's device. As with any test taken at home, nobody watches the candidate; a placement test only helps a student who answers honestly, and it is worth telling them so.

Where do the questions come from?

The bank began with questions written by teachers at the partner schools. Since 2026 new questions are written by AI to the public CEFR descriptions, and each is answered blind by a second, independent AI reviewer before it is used; in German, Italian, Spanish and French the teachers' questions went through the same check. The older English questions were checked against the recorded answers of real candidates, which is also where their difficulty comes from. A question that turns out to be faulty is taken out.

Working with it

How do we send a test?

Add the candidate in your portal, or import a list from Excel, and click Send. The candidate gets an e-mail with a personal link, in your wording and with your logo. You can send to a whole list at once and send a reminder later.

Can the test carry our school's name?

Yes. You upload your logo, choose your colour and write a few words of welcome. The candidate sees them on the invitation, on every question and on the result.

Can our own system send tests?

Yes. With your API key, your booking or school-management system can register a candidate and send the test in one call. The details are on the Integrations page.

Do we need Amber School Manager to use NGPT?

No. NGPT works on its own, in the browser. Schools that do run Amber School Manager can have placement tests included in their subscription; write to us.

Price and trial

What does it cost?

€1.99 per test, excluding VAT. You buy tests in advance by card, at least 10 at a time. There is no subscription, no set-up fee and no charge per teacher or per language.

What happens if a candidate never takes the test?

Then it costs you nothing. A test counts as used only when the candidate starts it. If an invitation is cancelled, or is not used within 30 days, the test goes back to your balance by itself.

Can we try it first?

Yes. Ask for a trial and we add 10 free tests to your school's account. They are complete tests with full results, so you can try them on real candidates or on your own teachers.

Is VAT added?

Prices are shown without VAT. VAT is added where it applies: 25% for schools in Croatia. Stripe sends a receipt at once, and we send the invoice by e-mail.

Data

Where is candidate data kept, and who can see it?

It is stored on servers in the European Union; e-mails are sent through a provider based in the USA, as the privacy policy sets out. Your school decides what is collected, and no other school can see its candidates or results. We process the data on your behalf and look at it only to run and support the service. You can delete a candidate at any time, which removes the name, e-mail address, phone number and date of birth.
