What a question looks like
Most are one sentence with one gap: the candidate chooses the missing word from three or four options, or types it, sometimes from a word given in brackets. Others ask which word or phrase fits. These three were written for this page; the real ones are drawn from the bank for each candidate.
- A2Ieri noi siamo andati al mare con gli amici.
- B1Penso che lui abbia ragione.
- B2Se me lo avessi detto, ti avrei aiutato.
What the questions cover
Grammar and vocabulary in use, from a first greeting to the fine print. The list shows the kind of thing asked at each stage; the test moves between them as the candidate answers.
Accents count in typed answers (è is not e), as they do in class. Capitals, stray spaces and a final full stop do not.
- A1 and A2
- presente, articoli e preposizioni articolate, passato prossimo, imperfetto, lessico quotidiano
- B1 and B1+
- congiuntivo presente, pronomi combinati, futuro e condizionale
- B2 and B2+
- congiuntivo imperfetto e trapassato, periodo ipotetico, forma passiva
- C1 and C2
- concordanza dei tempi, passato remoto, gerundio e costrutti impliciti, lessico e registro

About the Italian test
How long does the Italian placement test take?
Usually 15 to 20 minutes. The test asks 18 to 30 scored questions, plus up to 3 that are being tried out and do not count, and stops early when one level is clearly the most likely.
Which levels does the Italian test cover?
All eight: A1, A2, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, C1 and C2, with a score from 10 to 89 that shows where inside the level the candidate stands.
What does the Italian placement test cost?
€1.99 per test, excluding VAT, the same as every other language. There is no subscription, and a school can try 10 tests free.
Can we use it together with other languages?
Yes. One school account covers all five languages. You choose the language each time you send a test, and the results appear in the same list.
